You and the others
Pronin, Lin and Ross (2002) described this tendency and seven others to Stanford students, who rated themselves and the average American on the same scale from 1 to 9: averaged over the eight, 5.31 for themselves and 6.75 for the average American. The next year’s class rated themselves against their own classmates and gave 5.05 against 5.85. One person can truly sit below average, but a class taken together cannot sit below its own average.
